"Those who cannot remember the past, are condemned to repeat it."  George Santayana

History has many lessons to teach us.  As a lover of history and the study of all aspects of people,  I resonate with the sentiment in Santayana's quote that history is a very important part of our education.  We cannot critically evaluate and learn from the things we do not know.

History can also teach us practical lessons for today.  The oppression that has been so common throughout history helps us appreciate freedoms we hold today.  The gradual movement away from barter systems to a paper called money helps us understand why that paper has value.  The stock market crash of 1929 (is supposed to) show us that saving money is a wise investment for unknown times ahead, and the rise of Nazi Germany and WWII is a strong warning against a centralized power becoming too strong, invading every aspect of life, winning the minds of an entire people, and failing to adhere to moral boundaries in its quest for domination and genetic “purity.“
